On start up the suspension pump runs and the car is returned to a normal level. No errors are picked up on a STAR check and there are no dashboard warnings. Both N/S and O/S rear appear to be almost completely level. My local independent used the plug-in computer to force the pump to run and pump up the suspension fully then anaylsed this next day.

So either I source proper Mercedes springs from a non-SLS car and Bilstein shocks, or re-instate the W126 self-leveling suspension. As this car is so original, I plan to put the self-leveling back in. I hope I don't regret this, as the struts are now NLA, but there is still used stock.

I have replaced the rear suspension self leveling suspension pump and leveling valve. The height adjustment has proven difficult in that valve operation will raise the suspension, but does not respond to the lowering position. The only way I can lower the suspension is to bleed the pressure from the valve bleed point. The veh is a 1989 420SEL.
